Fun 1: How do
you enjoy yourself?
Fast
cars,
aircraft, powerboats — anything with big powerful
engines — are deadly to the planet. Not only do they
make most of the greenhouse gases (see my guide called
Hot Earth), they also make other poisonous pollution.
What's more, these powertoys kill many thousands
of people, birds and animals every year. If all you
care about is yourself, doing what you want and having
fun playing with powerful machines, then you're a
bigtime future-eater and probably won't be reading
this!
Playing with your friends uses your own energy while fixing broken things saves energy and avoids pollution because you don't need to buy another new one. Flying kites is fun. I tried it once, holding the string in my beak. I nearly flew — something scary for a bird that can't fly like me!
Using a computer or watching TV use about the same amount of electricity. Not much at all. Not much electricity = not much pollution. But reading uses no energy at all!
Giving a helping hand is a wonderful thing to do. If you've never tried helping someone else, give it a go. You might find it's not only fun but you feel really good about yourself afterwards. You're not polluting anything if your're cleaning windows, raking leaves, sweeping the yard and so on. Using a power grass-mower does pollute quite a lot unfortunately... so why not offer to dig up some of the grass and plant vegetables instead?!
